I went to an amazing exhibit of 651 red and white quilts, displayed in the enormous hall of the Armory. They were hung in spirals and pillars and waves and seemed somehow to be floating - or was it flying? Here's an article with lots of pictures. I wish I'd had the time and feet to examine more of the individual quilts, but I will never forget my first sight of the hall, with the mass of quilts that never looked crowded. I think the effect would have been lessened had these been the more usual multi-toned quilts, as much as I love them.
I ran into several old friends there, including ellen_kushner, whom I met when I was but an egg of a prospective freshman at Bryn Mawr. I was bowled over that there was someone else who knew who Thomas the Rhymer was, not to mention that she'd written a play(!) about him to boot. It is not entirely a coincidence that I enrolled the following fall, but she and I were never there at the same time. AK, an old crony from my days as a feckless student, was also there, and it was really nice to see her for the time she could spare from official duties. As she said, we could definitely tell tales on each other if we wanted to. It was good to finally meet deliasherman, although I kind of felt as if I already had.
Ellen and Delia were going to a book reading after the show, and they suggested I come along. I'm so glad they did! The book party was for Deathless by Catherynne M. Valente. I heard Cat read two excerpts and was immediately sold. She has melded WWII & Soviet Russia with traditional folktale style, and it was beautiful to listen to. It doesn't hurt that she reads really well. Deathless has gone on my must-acquire-asap list.
I was amused and should not have been surprised to run into a bunch of friends from the filk community there, and all became even more clear when I realized that one of the really wonderful musical performers had been Sooj Tucker, one of whose hats is filk. Heh. Pieces of my life do collide sometimes.
I went out with yet another old friend, on another evening, to a really good steakhouse and had a hanger steak that nearly melted in my mouth, and a good strawberry mojito that nearly took the top of my head off.
I haven't had such a wild social whirl in ages. It's been fun.
It's going to be spring someday. I know because the trees are already practicing rishathra.
I have a purring cat on my chest and will soon be cuddling in bed with two. |
